Leons Briedis
He was born in Madona District in 1949. In 1970 he was expelled from the Latvian State University for his anti-Soviet activity, and again in 1974 he was forced to leave the Department of Spanish Language and Literature at the Chisinau University due to his links with Moldavian democratic intelligentsia. From 1977 to 1979 he studied at the Maksim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow. Yet he was prohibited to publish his work for a certain period. As a poet, novelist, essayist, literary critic, playwright and a translator mainly from Romance languages, to date he has published 24 books of his own and about 40 books of translations. From 1974 he is a member of the Latvian Writers Union and from 1987 of the Latvian PEN Club as well, and its Vice-President in 1993-97. He has been recipient of many awards and distinctions at home and abroad.
